Geography Curriculum

Intent

At Bryn St Peter’s CE Primary School, we believe that a high-quality Geography education helps pupils understand the world around them and their place within it. Through the teaching of Geography, we aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the Earth, its people, places and environments, both in Britain and across the wider world.
We intend for all pupils to develop a secure knowledge of physical and human geography, while also understanding how environments change over time and how people interact with the world around them. Our Geography curriculum encourages pupils to ask questions, explore different places and cultures, and develop an awareness of environmental responsibility.
We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that helps pupils understand diversity, sustainability and global interdependence. As a Church of England school, we promote values of stewardship, respect and care for God’s creation, encouraging pupils to appreciate the beauty of the world and understand their responsibility to protect it. Through Geography, pupils develop a sense of belonging, curiosity about other cultures and an understanding of how their actions can have an impact locally and globally.

Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum is seen in pupils who develop a strong understanding of the world, its environments and the people who live in it. Pupils are able to locate places on a map, describe physical and human features, and explain how environments change over time.
Children show curiosity about different countries, cultures and landscapes, and are able to ask questions about the world around them. They use geographical vocabulary accurately and confidently when discussing their learning. Pupils develop the skills needed to interpret maps, use atlases and carry out simple fieldwork, helping them to understand their local area as well as the wider world.
Pupils also develop an awareness of environmental issues and understand the importance of caring for the Earth. They show respect for different cultures and communities and recognise that their actions can affect others.
By the time they leave Bryn St Peter’s, pupils have the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to continue their study of Geography at secondary school and a growing sense of responsibility for the world in which they live.

Geography Inclusion Statement

At our school, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and able to achieve their full potential. We recognise that all pupils are unique, with different strengths, needs, backgrounds and learning styles. We actively promote equality of opportunity and aim to remove barriers to learning so that all children can participate fully in school life.

We celebrate diversity and foster a culture of kindness, understanding, and mutual respect. All staff work collaboratively to support pupils’ academic, social, and emotional development, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and included.

Geography Adaptation Statement

We understand that some pupils may require additional support or adjustments to access the Geography curriculum effectively. Teaching is therefore adapted to meet the individual needs of all learners through a range of strategies, including adapted tasks, flexible teaching approaches, targeted interventions, and the use of appropriate resources or assistive technologies. We also work closely with parents, carers, and external professionals to ensure that adaptations are meaningful, inclusive, and responsive to each child’s needs.  Further details of this can be found within the Geography policy.
